Women's Soccer Ref Suspended 21 Days Because He Had Players Play Rock Paper Scissors When He Forgot His Coin For The Coin Toss

Referee David McNamara has been suspended for 21 days by the FA after asking captains to play rock, paper, scissors, after forgetting his coin.

The incident occurred ahead of the Women’s Super League game between Manchester City and Reading on October 26, and involved England captain Steph Houghton.

After forgetting his coin for the toss prior to kick-off, McNamara permitted the captains to play rock, paper, scissors, in order to determine playing ends and kick off.

An FA spokesman said: “The FA can confirm that referee David McNamara has been suspended for 21 days, starting from Monday 26th November, after accepting a charge of ‘not acting in the best interests of the game.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this seems extreme. I understand this was a Women’s Super League game against Man City and Reading and not some 8th grade regular season match, but how can you not fault the guy for initiative? The dude forgot his coin for the coin toss so he thought on his feet and came up with a quick resolution. It was a TV game and he was pressed for time. You want him to delay the start 15 mins so you can properly determine which side of the field you’re playing on? Not only does he not deserve a three week suspension, but he deserves a raise. We need more people like David McNamara in sports.

You know how long it probably would have took to find a coin? A whole lot longer than a quick rock, paper, scissors game I’ll tell ya that much. No one carries change anymore, because change is the worst. When someone gives me change at the register I look for ways to give it away. If they’re doing tips or a charity jar I’m throwing it in that every single time. That’s not a humble brag, that’s just how annoying carrying change is.

I guarantee the person that originally complained and got him suspended was the person who lost the rock, paper, scissors match. Real mature, just be better and don’t throw scissors when you know rock is coming. The quotes afterwards from the referee manager are dumb.

“The referee forgot his coin and in that moment, in a TV game, he was really pushed for time, it was a moment of madness. He obviously thought it was the right thing to do, he probably walked away, or the second afterwards, thought it wasn’t the right thing to do. It’s not defendable. He should have been more prepared, he should have had a coin but he didn’t. It was disappointing, it’s not appropriate, it’s very unprofessional.”

Give me a break lady. He didn’t fix the match, he didn’t fight a player, he saved everyone a waste of time and got shit moving.
